Mark S. Chambers, D.M.D., M.S.

Dr. Chambers is an internationally recognized oral oncologist and clinical investigator with a focus on developing novel therapeutic approaches to the oral sequelae of cancer therapy. He is the Director of Advanced Education programs in the Section of Oral Oncology, Department of Head and Neck Surgery at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Chambers is an Associate Professor of Head and Neck Surgery with a secondary appointment in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He has an appointment in the School of Health Sciences as an Adjunct Associate Professor. He serves on the Texas Cancer Council setting standards and treatment paradigms for management and prevention of the oral morbidity of cancer therapy. He is on numerous national and international scientific committees including the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics, Steering Committee on Mucositis in the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer, and on multiple editorial boards of oncologic journals. His research efforts have included the conduct of several novel clinical trials evaluating secretogogues, cytokines, and antibiotics in the management of radiation- and chemotherapy-induced xerostomia and mucositis. He has investigated multiple pharmacologic agents and drug delivery systems that have maximized salivary effects, minimized extraglandular morbidity, and protected oral soft tissues during oncologic therapy. For over ten years, his clinical and translational research focus has been to develop strategies to reduce cancer treatment-related oral morbidity and protocols to prevent or reduce such complications. His involvement in salivary and mucositis research and organized medicine has led to his recognition as chairman and collaborator on multiple task forces and expert panels in national and international organizations. Dr. Chambers has published extensively and has been recognized by the American Cancer Society as a Clinical Fellow.
