Professor Alfio Ferlito, MD, DLO, DPath,
FRCSEd ad hominem, FRCS (Eng, Glasg, Ir) ad eundem,
FDSRCS ad eundem, FACS, FHKCORL, FRCPath, FASCP, IFCAP
Director of the Department of Surgical Sciences, Professor and
Chairman of the ENT Clinic at the University of Udine School of
Medicine.
He graduated in medicine at the University of Bologna. After two
years at the University of Trieste, he worked at the ENT Department
of Padua University from 1970 to 1997.
Professor Ferlito has collaborated in writing articles, editorials,
commentaries, letters to the editor, special issues, book chapters
and books with 362 international experts. He has edited a three-volume
book entitled Cancer of the Larynx (CRC Press, Boca Raton,
1985) and three other books entitled Neoplasms of the Larynx
(Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh, 1993), Surgical Pathology
of Laryngeal Neoplasms (Chapman and Hall, London, 1996) and
Diseases of the Larynx (Arnold, London, 2000), and co-authored
two books entitled Granulomas and Neoplasms
of the Larynx together with Professor Imrich Friedmann (Churchill
Livingstone, Edinburgh, 1988) and Surgery for Cancer of the
Larynx and Related Structures together with Dr. Carl E. Silver
(Saunders, Philadelphia, 1996). He is editor with Dr. Marvin P.
Fried of the forthcoming third edition of the book entitled The
Larynx (Plural Publishing) and of the books Cancer of the
Larynx (Plural Publishing) and Pediatric Laryngology
(Plural Publishing). He is editor with Drs. K. Thomas Robbins and
Carl E. Silver of the forthcoming book entitled Neck Dissection
- Management of Regional Disease in Head and Neck Cancer (Plural
Publishing). He has been the author or co-author of 424 refereed
publications in 48 medical journals and 54 chapters in various books.
Professor Ferlito serves as editor, co-editor, assistant editor

professional ENT Societies including two Presidential Citations
from the American Laryngological Association for his contributions
made to the field of laryngology and the association. He has been
appointed as the International Liaison for Corresponding Fellows
of the American Laryngological Association. He is also a Fellowship
External Examiner in Otorhinolaryngology at the Royal College of
Surgeons in Ireland.
Professor Ferlito was visiting professor at the Departments of
Otolaryngology of the Universities of Ljubljiana, Valencia, Zagreb,
Yale, Pittsburgh, Amsterdam, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Seoul and
Tokyo, at the House Ear Institute of Los Angeles, at the Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Montefiore Medical Center of New
York. He collaborated as a member of the World Health Organization’s
Committee on Histological Typing of Tumours of the Upper Respiratory
Tract and Ear. He is also a member of the Laryngeal Cancer Association’s
Committee on the Classification of Laryngeal Cancer. He was consultant
to Yale University.
Professor Ferlito has delivered prestigious lectures all over the
world. Recently he gave the 2nd Morrison Lecture in San Francisco
(2006) and the 19th Som Lecture in New York (2006). He has divided
his professional life between clinical practice, teaching and research.
One of his chief interests is the promotion of international cooperation
in head and neck surgery, oncology and cancer research.
