Dr. Fernandes earned his medical degree form the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed his dental education at Boston University. He received specialty training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Alabama. He completed a fellowship in maxillofacial oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery at the University of Maryland.

He is the author of 5 book chapters, and 29 papers and abstracts in peer reviewed journal. Dr. Fernandes specializes in the management of oral cancer, benign and malignant tumors of the jaws, salivary gland pathology and reconstructive surgery, including microvascular tissue transfer for head and neck reconstruction.
