Dr David R Moles
PhD, BDS, MSc, MSc(Hons), MIHPE, ILTM, DDPH RCS(Eng)

David Moles is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Health Services Research and the Director of Education Operations at the Eastman Dental Institute (EDI), University College London (UCL). He is the Deputy Director of the International Centre for Evidence Based Oral Health (ICEBOH), a Founding Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO) and a Founding Member of the European Association of Dental Public Health (EADPH).

He qualified in Dentistry at the University of London in 1989 and undertook his vocational training in the Community Dental Service in North London where he went on to work as both a Community Dental Officer and a Senior Dental Officer (Dental Public Health). He obtained the Diploma in Dental Public Health of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1993 and the MSc (with distinction) in Dental Public Health in 1994. David was appointed Research Fellow in the Department of Dental Health Policy, EDI, in 1994 and Clinical Lecturer in Transcultural Oral Health in 1996. In 1998 he was awarded a Medical Research Council UK (MRC) Advanced Course Studentship to study for a second Masters degree in Medical Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and subsequently a MRC Special Training Fellowship to undertake his PhD studies in oral cancer epidemiology jointly between LSTM and EDI which he completed in 2003. In 2004 he was promoted to Senior Clinical Lecturer.

David has acted as board member and statistical adviser to several journals including: Oral Oncology; the British Dental Journal; and Evidence Based Dentistry. He referees for numerous journals including: Archives of Oral Biology; Journal of Periodontal Research; Oral Diseases; British Dental Journal; Evidence Based Dentistry; Oral Oncology; and Community Dental Health. He is a statistical adviser to the Cochrane Oral Health Group and is actively engaged in research in Evidence Based Dentistry and the teaching and development of quantitative research methodologies and is a member of the dental subcommittee of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics (ISCB)

In 2003 and again in 2004 he was a co-recipient of the Systematic Review prize awarded by the International Collaboration for Evidenced Based Dentistry (ICEBD) in collaboration with the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). He was the inaugural Delta Dental - Forsyth Institute Evidence Based Dentistry Fellow (Travelling Fellowship) for 2003-2004.

He is a frequent recipient of invitations to lecture within continental Europe; the Nordic countries; North America and the Far-East and has lectured widely on research methodologies; statistics; clinical trials; evidence based dentistry and meta-analysis. In conjunction with Dr Ian Needleman he runs the ever-popular 4-day introductory course in evidence based dentistry at the EDI which is attended by researchers from around the globe.
