Prof. Jan L.N. Roodenburg PhD
Jan Roodenburg is extraordinary professor in Maxillofacial Oncology
and Head of the Div. Oncology of the Dept. Maxillofacial Surgery of the
University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) in The Netherlands. This Division
is part of the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Oncology Group of the UMCG
that works in close cooperation with Medical Centre Leeuwarden (MCL).
This group sees about 400 new head and neck cancer cases each year. Therefore
the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Oncology Group UMCG-MCL has the possibility
to do clinical research, give training in Head and Neck Oncology to specialists,
trainees, nurse practioners, medical and dental students and nurses.
His research fields are PET, in vivo fluorescence of premalignant and
malignant lesions of the oral mucosa, radiotherapy and chemotherapy induced
oral mucositis, morbidity of neckdissection, CO2-laser surgery of oral
leukoplakia, dental implants in head and neck cancer patients, nutrition
in head and neck cancer patients and malignancies in Sögren’s
syndrome.
He did and does board functions as chairman of the Dutch Head and Neck
Cooperative Group, President of the 7th International Congress on Oral
Cancer 2001 in The Hague, chairman of the committee for national guidelines
for the treatment of oral and oropharygeal cancer and chairman for the
committee for site visits and accreditation of multidisciplinary head
and neck cancer centres.
Jan Roodenburg and the Div. Oncology of the Dept. Maxillofacial Surgery
are acknowledged for the two year extended training in Head and Neck Oncology
for Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is involved in the education and training
of trainees in maxillofacial surgery, nurse practioners, medical and dental
students and nurses.
He is member of the board of the journal Oral Oncology and reviewer
for the Dutch National Cancer Foundation.
