Dr Julia Woolgar, FRCPath, FDS RCS Eng, PhD, is Senior Lecturer in Oral
Pathology, University of Liverpool, UK, and Honorary Consultant, Royal
Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, Liverpool, and
Aintree Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool. She is the author
of over 85 articles, mainly on histological and prognostic features of
oral and oropharyngeal cancer. She co-authors the Royal College of Pathologist’s “Minimum
Dataset for Histopathology Reports on Head and Neck Carcinomas and Salivary
Neoplasms” (2005, 2011).
Histopathological studies on the local and regional lymphatic spread
of oral cancer and their prognostic importance earned her The International
Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Prize for The Best Published
Article in the Year 1997 and the Royal College of Surgeons of England
John Tomes Prize Medal in 2002. An article on histological changes in
skin-flaps was awarded the Head and Neck Optical Diagnostics Society
Prize in 2009. Recent articles have been aimed mainly at reporting pathologists
and include several detailed guides on practical aspects of assessing
surgical resection specimens and neck dissections. She has given keynote
presentations at several National, European and International meetings.
She is a member of the International Head & Neck Scientific Group
and the Board of Advisors of the European Head and Neck Society (EHNS)
and was Chairperson of the Pathology Sub-committee of the Head & Neck
Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer
(EORTC) from 2000-2003. From 1996-2010, she played a key role in the
development of Quality Assurance Schemes for Histopathologists and was
the Organiser of the UK National Head and Neck Histopathology External
Quality Assurance Scheme since its introduction in 2000 until 2008 and
served on the Royal College of Pathologists Steering Committee for EQA
from 2007-10. Currently, she is a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee
(Other Specialities), the Royal College of Surgeons of London; the Council
of the British Society for Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, and is
an examiner for Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists. As a
guest Faculty Member of the Eurasian Federation of Oncology, she regularly
co-chairs meetings and seminars for head and neck pathologists in the
Russian Federation and countries of the former USSR. Her Editorial Board
experience includes Oral Oncology (since 2001), The Asian Journal of
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (since 2001), The International Journal
of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (since 2002), The British Journal
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (since 2003) and Head and Neck Oncology
(since 2008).
