The Academy draws its authority from its Founding Fellowship of clinicians and scientists of repute worldwide, leaders in their fields, who have united to establish the only independent international body representing the interests of the whole spectrum of sciences related to oral oncology.

Fellowship of the Academy is open to all with an interest in the field, subject to certain conditions detailed in the constitution.

The Academy mission is to bring together clinicians and scientists working in the field of oral oncology, so that advances in medical science can be made and translated speedily into benefits for patients.

History

The concept of an international academy to draw together clinicians and scientists working in the field of oral oncology, so that advances in medical science can be made and translated speedily into benefits for patients, arose from the interactions between Alexander Rapidis and Crispian Scully, whilst working together during 2004/2005 as chairmen organising an international congress on oral cancer, in Crete, Greece. Discussions with their mutual colleague John Langdon, a leading research clinician from UK confirmed that there was a real need for such a formal group. Therefore leading research clinicians in the field from USA (Jatin Shah) and Europe (Jean-Louis Lefebvre) were approached to form a steering committee.

This committee were requested to nominate a number of active colleagues in the field from around the world, mostly clinicians or scientists recently publishing in the field as identified by MEDLINE. These colleagues were then formally approached personally by telephone. The first 150 contacted were unanimous in their enthusiasm for such an Academy - and thus was established the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO). The Academy has subsequently grown and, in 2011, IAOO became affiliated to IFHNOS.

Presidential welcome

IAOO has made great strides under the Presidencies of Jatin Shah and Jean-Louis Lefebvre. The success of IAOO is demonstrable particularly in the collaborations which have grown, especially from interactions at the Congresses. We hope to build upon their good work, and make the next Congress, in Greece May 2013 an even greater success from all aspects. IAOO has now joined IFHNOS (International Federation of Head and Neck Oncological Societies), and we have expanded the IAOO Council and are involving Councillors increasingly in decisions, which we trust will be even more transparent. We welcome any criticisms and helpful suggestions from the membership or others, about the Congresses, or other matters.
