The third world congress "Oral Cancer: Ying and Yang; Balancing Cures and Consequences" was held at the Copthorne Waterfront centre, Singapore, from July 14-17, 2011

More than 600 Head and Neck Surgeons, Maxillofacial Surgeons, Otolaryngologists, Oncologists, Oral Pathologists and others in the head and neck cancer team congregated from around the world at the Third Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO).

Organised by Drs Christopher Goh and Soo Khee Chee, this Congress was another great success.

The Congress covered a multitude of topics representing subspecialist interests in the major sub-divisions of the field. The scientific program included keynote addresses, panel discussions, debates, instructional courses, oral papers and posters. The program was supported by a commercial exhibition,and delegate receptions.

July 2009

The second world congress of the International Academy Of Oral Oncology (IAOO) was held at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto, Canada, July 8-11, 2009.

The scientific program, including keynote addresses, panel discussions, debates, instructional courses, oral papers and posters, and a supportive care symposium, were outstanding successes, as was the social program. There was a very large attendance despite the prevailing global recession and swine flu pandemic.

IAOO Oral Cancer Seminar, Friday 26 October 2007, Antalya, Turkey

The IAOO organized an Oral Cancer Seminar during the II. Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Congress of the Turkish Oncology Head and Neck Cancer Group. This took place in the beautiful city of Antalya in Turkey on Friday 26 October 2007.
The participants included Professors Jatin P. Shah, President of IAOO, Randal S. Weber (USA), Ralph W. Gilbert (Canada) and Alexander D. Rapidis, Treasurer of IAOO. The seminar was chaired by Professors Enis Ozyar, Sefik Hosal and Levent Soylu from Turkey and participants included Professors Mahmut Ozsahin (Switzerland) and Mehmet Sen (UK).

In this one day seminar a comprehensive outline of the multidisciplinary aspect in the treatment of oral cancer was presented in detail. The seminar was divided in four parts in the form of panel discussions, and included Surgical Management of Oral Cancer, Multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, Management of the Neck, and Outcomes of therapy.
More than 200 participants from Turkey and not only attended this very successful event which was followed by a two day congress of the Turkish Head and Neck Group.

Turkish hosts provided an exquisite hospitality and a very pleasant social program to all participants.

Chris O'Brien receives Special Recognition Award for Lifelong Service to Head and Neck Oncology

Congratulations to Chris O'Brien who received the IAOO Special Recognition Award for Lifelong Service to Head and Neck Oncology. The award was presented to Professor O'Brien by David Wiesenfeld, Council Member IAOO and Secretary of the ANZHNS, at the 9th Annual Scientific Meeting of the ANZHNS held in Brisbane, Australia in July.

First congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology

Between 17-21st May, 2007, more than 750 Head and Neck Surgeons, Maxillofacial Surgeons, Otolaryngologists, Oncologists and others in the head and neck cancer team congregated from around the world at the First Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO), coordinated by the President, Professor Jatin Shah (New York), and the Program Chairs, Alexander Rapidis (Athens and Eastman) and Crispian Scully (Eastman). This Congress was held in Amsterdam at the Rai Congress Centre and was an enormous success, being completely sold out months before the event.

The Congress covered a multitude of topics representing subspecialist interests in the major sub-divisions of the field. The scientific program included keynote addresses, panel discussions, debates, instructional courses, oral papers and posters. The program was supported by a commercial exhibition, delegate receptions and a Gala Dinner.

IAOO officers meeting in Italy, agreed the final programme for the IAOO Congress May 17th 2007 at Rai Congress centre, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The Crete Declaration on Oral Cancer Prevention 2005 – A commitment to action

The congress on Oral Cancer which took place 19-24 April 2005 in Crete, Greece, welcomed the initiative to analyse the evidence on oral cancer and the implications for prevention and public health programmes.

The participants from 57 countries emphasized that oral health is an integral part of general health and well-being. They expressed concern about the neglected burden of oral cancer which particularly affects developing countries with low availability of prevention programmes and services for oral health.

Participants took note of the following documents essential to improved health and disease control in the 21st Century.

The participants hereby affirm their commitment to oral health and general health as a basic human right and resolve to support the work carried out by national and international health authorities, research institutions, non-governmental organizations and civil society for the effective control of oral cancer. In particular, the following areas of work should be strengthened:

(a) provision of systematic epidemiological information on prevalences of cancer and risks to cancer in countries, particularly in the developing world.

(b) promotion of research into understanding biological, behavioural and psychosocial factors in oral cancer, emphasizing the inter-relationship between oral health and general health

(c) integrating oral cancer information into national health surveillance systems which record chronic diseases and common risk factors

(d) dissemination of information on oral cancer, prevention and care through every possible means of communication

(e) active involvement of oral health professionals in oral cancer prevention through control of risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol and diet

(f) training of primary health workers in screening and provision of first-level care in oral cancer

(g) access to health facilities and provision of systems for early detection and intervention, oral health care and health promotion for the improvement of quality of life of people affected by oral cancer

The participants support the efforts of the WHO Oral Health Programme aiming at coordination and inter-country sharing of experiences in prevention and oral health care of people affected by oral cancer.

Inaugural Meeting takes place in Crete, Greece

The inaugural meeting of the International Academy of Oral Oncology took place on 19 April 2005 at the Aldemare Royal Mare Village Hotel, Crete, Greece.

At the meeting Professor Jatin Shah was appointed to the position of President of the society, Professor Jean-Louis LeFebvre, Vice-President, Professor Crispian Scully CBE, Secretary General, Professor John Langdon, Treasurer; and Professor Alexis Rapidis, Meetings Secretary.
